Am I Eligible for Express Entry in Canada?

There is a way to get your permanent residence in Canada and work there for good. The Canada Express Entry is a federal immigration system that grants permanent immigrant status to applicants based on their skills and ability.

Considered the fastest and most popular option for immigrants to take – in fact, bringing around 110,000 skilled workers each year - Express Entry is a system that analyzes the application profiles submitted by skilled workers who wish to become permanent residents in Canada. In a two-step process, an applicant submits a profile containing the necessary information and waits for the Canadian government to invite them to apply for Permanent Residency.

Below are details on eligibility, requirements, and the process of becoming an immigrant in Canada through Express Entry.

Express Entry Canada Eligibility

To be able to immigrate to Canada via Express Entry, you must meet the criteria of any of three federal economic immigration programs, namely, the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).

Each program has a set of criteria and caters to a specific category of eligible candidates for immigration. The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) only requires candidates to meet minimum work experience, language ability, and education requirements. Meanwhile, the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is ideal for applicants who have recently completed 12 months of eligible full-time work in Canada. The Federal Skilled Trades Worker Program (FSTW) is for qualified, skilled trade workers allowed entry to address labor shortages.

How does Express Entry work?

Canadian Express Entry draws qualified candidates through a comprehensive ranking system. The profile of an aspiring immigrant is thoroughly evaluated and scored based on age, education, language skills, work experience, and other human capital and skill transferability factors.

Applicants must finish their general training and language testing, and obtain their educational credentials before submitting a profile. Candidates must take a standardized language test evaluating the four language skills: reading, speaking, writing, and listening in English or French, or both.

Those who have a diploma or certificate not issued from Canada must present an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report for educational credentials. The ECA is used to determine whether the applicant's educational level obtained from the foreign institution is equal to a degree, diploma, or completed certificate in Canada's educational system.

The submitted and evaluated profiles are ranked according to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Top candidates will be sent an invitation to apply (ITA) for Express Entry and get a permanent residency in Canada upon meeting certain requirements. Each candidate needs to meet the minimum eligibility program requirements; the higher the points, the better the chances of receiving an invitation.

How are CSR scores calculated?

The Comprehensive Ranking System ranks candidates based on certain factors to determine if they are eligible to receive an invitation to apply for Express Entry. These include age, educational level, high language proficiency, Canadian education or work experience, and other human capital, skill transferability, and additional factors such as offer of employment and provincial nomination.

If your age falls within the 20-to-29 years bracket, you will be able to obtain a maximum score of 100 as a married candidate with spouse accompanying, or 110 as a single candidate. However, it does not mean that you are no longer qualified if you are 30 years old or above; you will only receive lesser points for the criteria.

A higher score is given for a higher level of educational attainment. You can receive the maximum score for educational level amounting to 140 points if you are a doctorate holder applying as a married candidate with spouse accompanying, or 150 points as a single candidate. Meanwhile, you can only obtain a minimum of 28 points if your educational attainment equals Canada's higher secondary education level.

Your score in language proficiency level for Express Entry is assessed based on the Canadian Language Benchmark Level or CLB. You must thus complete your language test in English or French before submitting your profile. Your proficiency score will determine your CRS score for your language skills.

Canada Express Entry also places importance on your work experience in other countries. You can get a maximum of 50 points depending on your number of years of work. More years of work means a higher score obtained.

Do you have work experience based in Canada? That's even better. You could potentially earn more points if you previously worked for at least one year in Canada with a minimum of 30 hours per week or equivalent. The highest score you can obtain is 70 points. However, be reminded that any work experience you acquired while studying cannot be counted.

How Long Does the Express Entry Process Take

Assuming that you received an invitation to apply (ITA) for the Canada Express Entry, there is no way to tell how long the processing time will take because it will depend on when a complete permanent residence application is received. However, based on our experience, 95% of our clients obtained their permanent residency for themselves and family members within 6-10 months post-submission.

If you haven't been invited, don't worry! Each Express Entry profile has one-year validity and can be used for resubmission if a candidate does not receive an ITA within one year of their Express Entry profile creation.

Conclusion

Canada Express Entry is the most cost-effective immigration process for Canada's aspiring immigrants. It relies on a point system where candidates submit their profile and are evaluated according to age, educational level, language ability, and work experience. Eligible candidates must first meet the criteria of any of the three economic immigration programs.

After you obtain your CSR score and meet the minimum points qualification, the Canadian government will send you an invitation to apply (ITA) for immigration and become a permanent resident of Canada.
