For those of you who don’t know about the C12 or Intra-Company Transfer work permit program (ICT) as part of the International Mobility Program of the Canadian immigration department, all you need to know is that:
A: It’s a federal program that allows you to receive a work permit to set up a branch or subsidiary or joint venture in Canada.
B: You need an existing operational company in your country of residency that can afford to invest in Canada and has been in operation for at least 1 year.
C: If you are not from a Free-Trade Agreement country with Canada, you need to prove a significant economic benefit for Canadians through this investment in the branch or subsidiary.
D: There must be a clear relationship between the parent company and controlling the stake in the branch in Canada.
F: If it’s a new branch, during the first year you can send over one executive or key staff member from overseas to start & run the business in Canada with a work permit – anywhere in Canada except Quebec.

How long does it really take and what options do you have to make the process faster? Are you in a rush? There are 3 categories of processing times to consider for anyone who is applying for this type of work permit:
1: From high-volume regions around the world such as the Middle East, India, Vietnam, and Africa, you can expect a processing time of 4 to 6 months, depending on which country you are a resident of and the corresponding Canadian embassy. The best case is 4 months, and the worst case in very extreme cases could go up to 6 months.
2: For applicants from the US, Europe, Central, and South America, Korea, and Japan you can expect your work permits to be processed within 3 months or even less and worst case 3.5 months.
3: And for anyone who is interested in the Intra-Company Transfer program who has a valid Canadian visitor visa, or is visa exempt and has a US visa inside Canada, your processing time can be virtually 3-5 hours. That’s correct, hours not months. This is because you can go and make a paper application at the border between the US & Canada (also known as flag polling).
These were literally the 3 processing times that you will experience when applying under the Intra-Company transfer program. We like it because it’s a federal program and allows you to obtain a work permit that is renewable for up to 7 years to work inside Canada for the branch or subsidiary that you or your parent company have set up. And of course, don’t forget that you can obtain and claim bonus points in Express Entry after being inside Canada with such a work permit for 12 months on the payroll.
