Toronto - an attractive destination for immigrants to Canada

Many people who intend to apply for Canadian permanent residency (PR), have the same question as to where and/or under which program to apply. This article summarizes the reasons why I chose Toronto after having PR.

Toronto in the province of Ontario is the largest city in Canada; every year the number of immigrants into Toronto is the majority in the country. In 2019, Toronto welcomed 95,534, out of a total of 341,000 newcomers entering Canada. This figure may decrease to 65,710 (net in-migration) in 2020, a lower increase at 1.7% as compared to 2% of the previous years. Despite the huge impact from the Covid-19 pandemic, Toronto's economy is still forecasted to grow again from 2021, and the number of immigrants to Toronto will continue to increase steadily <report from the Conference Board of Canada>.

Toronto is considered one of the most liveable cities in the world in terms of stability, infrastructure, healthcare, education, culture, and environment (according to Global Liveability Index 2019). The public transport system is so convenient with buses, subways, trams... And 2 Toronto Pearson International Airport, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. Toronto is a multicultural city with many languages but the main language is English which makes the integration much easier. Also, the supporting policy for newcomers is really helpful with free English classes and effective employment services. Key economic sectors such as finance, technology, healthcare, and real estate will still need a workforce, especially newcomers from all over the world. If you have children, you will be supported with a subsidy for childcare which releases partially your financial pressure. With the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), some of your healthcare services will be covered. Moreover, the cold weather in the winters will be controlled by heating systems everywhere and compensated by the warm summers with blue sky.

Furthermore, international students can choose to study at one of 4 universities, or 6 colleges here. There are even more universities and colleges outside of the city limits - with the highest number of educational institutions in these provinces compared to anywhere else in Canada. Free elementary, secondary, and high school education in the public school system is usually chosen by most newcomers and work/study permit holders for their children. Toronto has a various system of public, private, and Catholic schools for these levels of education.

Last but not least, from a business standpoint, it is the thriving capital of Canada with many corporate headquarters within the Greater Toronto Area. The business accelerator and startup investment ecosystem in Toronto is also world-class, sometimes being recognized as the international hub for developments and research in Artificial Intelligence. As the only city in Canada with 4 professional franchise teams, it attracts a lot of attention from foreign and local investors and business persons.

It is so clear that Toronto is the most attractive city in Canada for immigrants for its healthcare, education, infrastructure systems, stability, culture, and environment. In order to settle down in Toronto, there are many federal immigration programs that help you like the Express Entry Canada, Start-up visa Canada, or the PNP programs such as OINP (Ontario Immigration Nomination Program) entrepreneurship, foreign workers, and international students.
